Over the years, we have found various useful free software that we use daily, on our PC's and on the net. That software is made available here for your benefit. (Note July 2009: We have opened up this section whilst we rebuild our website)

Office Productivity Suite:
Open Office is the leading open-source office software suite  for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. It can be downloaded and used completely free of charge for any purpose. 

Audit Utility:
Gasp is a powerful auditing tool that provides detailed reports about the software installed on every  computer on your network, to help you ensure license compliance, control costs, identify illegal files and  make informed maintenance and upgrade decisions. Freebyte Backup is a freeware backup program for Windows. It allows one to easily copy (and filter) a large number of files and directories from various sources into one backup directory.
Ad-Aware has the ability to scan your RAM, Registry, hard drives, and external storage devices for known data-mining, advertising, and tracking components, Ad-Aware 2008 can clean your system easily, allowing you to maintain a higher degree of privacy while you surf the Web.
Spybot Search and Destroy detects and removes spyware, for free!. (Donations accepted by the author).

PC Utilities:
7 Zip Free file compression software. Handles all ZIP formats.
Real VNC Personal Edition-Remote PC control software.
FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client and server with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.
HoverSnap is a free handy snapshot tool with jpg, png, bmp and gif support. HoverSnap can take  snapshots of the full screen, active window or a selected area. It can even capture layered windows  (alphablended ones under 2K / XP).
HoverWeather is a new program by HoverInc that will display the current weather on the desktop. Displayed are location, local time, weather conditions and temperature (Celsius or Fahrenheit). HoverWeather is also capable of displaying tomorrow´s weather forecast.
HoverNews is a free standalone news grabbing application that is based on the plug-in of the same name for HoverDesk.
HoverMatch is a FREEWARE utility designed to allow desktop customizers to modify existing themes and skins to their tastes by altering an images Hue, Saturation and Brightness values and saving the results.
Fast File Renamer: Fast File Renamer is a freeware program which can help you with the tedious task of renaming large numbers of files. The program can be used by anyone who needs to keep large collections of files organized (such as mp3 files, image and graphics files, web-site-related files, system files).
Ultimate Boot CD or UBCD allows users to run floppy-based diagnostic tools from most CDROM drives on Intel-compatible machines, no operating system required. The cd includes many diagnostic utilities and can also be used to provide shared internet access or browse the web.
TeraCopy: Free utility designed to copy/move files faster and more securely. Can resume broken file transfers.

PC Communication Software:
 Mozilla Firefox Advanced Tabbed Web Browser. Choose your own plugins. Highly customisable.
 Mozilla Thunderbird Email client. Can handle multiple email addresses in one system.
 Opera, the award-winning Opera Web browser. "The coolest, fastest, and most secure Web browser available."

FireBug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of web development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page.
Bugzilla  is a "Defect Tracking System" or "Bug-Tracking System". Defect Tracking Systems allow individual or groups of developers to keep track of outstanding bugs in their product effectively. Most commercial defect-tracking software vendors charge enormous licensing fees. Despite being "free", Bugzilla has many features its expensive counterparts lack.

Skype Make calls from your computer - free to other people on Skype and cheap to phones and mobiles around the world.
Skype Hidden Emoticons are fun undocumented Skype emoticons.
Tonic is a LAN only instant Messenger. Keeps all communications from leaking out to the internet. Chat to your work colleagues on your LAN even if the internet is blocked or down.

Technical Resources:
SpeedFan is a program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature and show hard disk temperatures too, if supported. SpeedFan supports SCSI disks too.
HoverIP is a powerful set of IP utilities, all inside a single box.
CPU-Z is freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system.
PC-Wizard is a powerful utility designed especially for detection of hardware, but also some more analysis. It's able to identify a large scale of system components and supports the latest technologies and standards.
ClockGen is a program dedicated to overclocking. Its main purpose is to change the system clocks on the fly: FSB (Front Side Bus) and GSB (Graphic Side Bus). ClockGen also provides some functions that allow you to improve and monitor your overclock.
PerfMonitor is a processor performance monitoring tool. It allows to track the frequency of 4 events choosen in a set of model-specific list.
RegSeeker includes a powerful registry cleaner and can display various informations like your startup entries, several histories (even index.dat files), installed applications and much more.
Test My Hardware: is free software utility with simple system information and diagnostics utility that provides detailed information about all your hardware components, such as your CPU, memory, operating system, power source, memory.
Netlimiter is an ultimate internet traffic control and monitoring tool designed for Windows. You can use NetLimiter to set download/upload transfer rate limits for applications or even single connection and monitor their internet traffic. Along with this unique feature, Netlimiter offers comprehensive set of internet statistical tools. It includes real-time traffic measurement and long-term per-application internet traffic statistics. There is a freeware monitor version as well as full versions.

Design / Graphics / Desktop Enhancements:
K3D is a complete free-as-in-freedom 3D modeling, animation and rendering system.
User Interface Icons High Qualtiy Free Icons that are better than some paid ones.
Paint.net is a free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows.
Display Fusion is an application that can make your dual monitor (or triple monitor or more) life much much easier! From allowing you to use a different wallpaper on each monitor, to integrating with Flickr for image searching, to providing hotkeys for managing your application windows. There is a paid for Pro version but this may not be necessary except for some real gung-ho users.
Robust Icon Maker or RIM is a program to edit and create icons, cursors and animated cursors - using the common editing tools and effects, Import icons from images and files, and export icons in a custom size and color depth.
Favicon generator by DeGraeve is a handy online tool if you cannot be hassled with making your own favicon pixel by pixel.
Frank's Icons is another online resource where you can make Icons, Animated Icons and Favicons.
WhatTheFont! Seen a font in use and want to know what it is? Submit an image to WhatTheFont to find the closest matches in our database.

Multimedia:
TVersity is a multimedia file sharing utility that combines and monitors all your media folders (sound, video etc.) and streams it across your network to a UPnP device like the xBox. It delivers any media to any device; an extensible platform independent Media Server that can serve any media to any networked device doing all the necessary conversions to overcome the limitations of any given device.
XP Codec Pack is one of the most complete codec packs which helps you play all major audio and video formats. And... to enjoy your multimedia experience, instead of 3 or 4 different players you get one, simple integrated player that plays almost all audio and video files: Media Player Classic.
Free Codecs.com is a site that carries dozens of Codecs. LAME being one of the most used, despite it's name!

Security Resources:
SuperScan is a powerful TCP port scanner, pinger, resolver. Note: SuperScan 4 is an update of the highly popular Windows port scanning tool, SuperScan. Windows XP Service Pack 2 has removed raw sockets support which now limits SuperScan and many other network scanning tools. Some functionality can be restored by running the following at the Windows command prompt before starting SuperScan:
net stop SharedAccess

Printing:
PDF Creator is a free tool to create PDF files from nearly any Windows application via the Print menu. It works as a printer driver and you can convert Word documents, Excel spreadsheet's or any printable document from most apllications into PDF's.

Calculating:
We all fell in love with them and used them long before PC's became mainstream and affordable.
TI Calculators. My first foray into programmable devices was with my Dad's TI-59 with card reader! and I played with it as much as he would let me or in the Mine Lab whilst he was underground for a few hours. It was the most powerful programmable calculator of it's time (1977!) Here is a web site dedicated to the TI-59 with some TI Calc Sims.
HP Calculators.  Here are some very nice HP Calc Sims of the old favourites and links to other HP Calc sims for PDA's etc.

Operating Systems:
Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more. You can even boot the Operating System from your PC's CD/DVD-Rom drive and test the software without overwriting your currently installed Operating System! Simply download the ISO, burn it to a CD/DVD-Rom and restart your PC. Simple and free!

Cellular:
My MobileR is a PC Utility to view & control your mobile's screen on your PC's desktop using PC mouse and keyboard (Supports ActiveSync / IP Connection via a USB data cable, WiFi or WLAN or Bluetooth). Copy/Cut/Paste text between mobile and desktop. Capture mobile screen. Drag and drop files to your mobile.  Supports Mobile Explorer (File Browse).
NAV4All is a free Windows Mobile Utility for your GPS Enabled Cell Phone. Yes you can buy fancy off the shelf software and pay $$$, but this one is free and has many useful features. I use it in the RSA but there are hundreds of maps online for all over the world. With Nav4All you can navigate worldwide on your own mobile phone in North America, Brasil, Mexico, Europe, South Africa, Australia and soon in China as well. Saves having to carry two devices; a phone AND a GPS. I use it on my TyTyn II and it's perfect for road trips or hiking, fishing, hunting, etc. POI, WayPoints, Routes you name it!

Gaming : PC
Please note that you will need a broadband connection and lots of bandwidth to download these games! If you are in Midrand, swing past our office and we will cut you a copy of the games for the price of a DVD-RW Dual (8Gb) Disk. (About R25-00 per disk). Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is a 3D FPS. It was created by Splash Damage . Almost any Windows PC with at least a 600 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, 32 MB OpenGL graphics card, 56.6k Modem/LAN will be able to play this. Great for impromptu office or home LAN competitions. Local ZA server for faster downloads here which Includes the game (264MB), mods and patches.
America's Army is a 3D FPS. It was created by the American Government to assist with US Army recruitment. It requires Windows 2000, XP or Vista; Internet access or LAN; 2.4 GHz+ CPU or equivalent; 512 MB+ RAM; DirectX 9.0+; 128 MB+ 3D graphics card supporting transform and lighting; 3.5 GB+ of free hard drive space. Local ZA server for faster downloads here which Includes the game (2.6GB), mods and patches.
